Recently, I watched the Netflix film “Purple Hearts,” recommended by a friend. I went in completely “blind” — with no idea what it was about, no expectations, and no knowledge of the cast. It turned out to be the story of a waitress with diabetes who’s chasing her dream of becoming a singer but faces serious financial struggles because of her illness, and a soldier carrying a heavy load from his past. I assumed it would be a predictable tearjerker, but it proved to be an unconventional, mature melodrama. I appreciated the screenplay for letting both main characters make decisions as independent individuals — yes, motivated by love and care for one another, but still conscious choices for which they later bore the consequences. For such young people, they showed striking maturity; I didn’t find any corny dialogue or overblown scenes. Everything felt believable, and the whole thing was elevated by an excellent soundtrack — especially the lyrics — and a well-crafted story. Neither of the two leads slips into the role of a victim or the “weaker party”; both fight for what matters to them and end up gaining more than they expected. There’s no prince on a white horse rescuing a frail princess, and no warrior queen sacrificing herself for her family. It’s a beautiful story about what true marriage and love are, about overcoming your own fears and beliefs, and about making decisions that change your life. I’ll try not to spoil anything — you can safely read on, and I highly recommend watching it.

Long before this film, I had been reflecting on the institution of marriage — on whether sincere, true love is possible, and whether it’s really given to us to live our whole lives in harmony with one person. Today it’s easy to get married and — in a similarly simple way — to end a marriage. Well, perhaps a bit harder if there’s a shared mortgage. But we live in times when both sexes can function independently, consciously making the best decisions for themselves. I believe that real marriage has the bittersweet flavor of burnt shared dinners, great breakfasts, hot baths, good and not-so-good sex, differences of opinion, arguments — and love, all at once.

The beginning of a relationship is easy; it gets harder when the first obstacles appear, when the other person’s behavior surprises us, and our idealized picture of them collapses. That’s when we ask: is this the moment to run, or to fight for the relationship? Though we don’t like to admit it, entering an intimate, deep relationship can be frightening — you have to drop your guard and stop pretending you don’t care. For me, the hardest part was showing that I do care — because if I care, I can be hurt and abandoned. The result is a broken heart, carrying the pain until the next love comes along (even if, in the moment, it feels like we’ll suffer until the end of our lives — or the end of the world).

Letting down the walls we maintain so carefully allows us to face our greatest fear. I had been abandoned and rejected so many times that I built a solid wall that — I believed — would protect me from being hurt again. What terrified me most was rejection. I treated it as failure: once again I’d been deceived, once again I’d let myself be fooled. I blamed only myself — for trusting the wrong person. That’s what I had to face, taking my wall apart brick by brick. The protagonists, too, carry their own fears, and their relationship becomes real in the moments when they open up — when they are most vulnerable, and therefore most authentic. We don’t know how such a story ends. We may gain the love we deserve, and we may also get hurt. Even so, the risk is worth taking — because what’s at stake is a full life, one that truly makes us happy.

The marriage vow assumes a union of two people until death do them part. So why do we so often choose convenience today and file for divorce when something doesn’t suit us? The strength of marriage lies in the finality of the vow — we have to find a way to work things out. We can live apart, we can go half a year without talking, we can even toss each other’s things off the balcony, but ultimately the person you may hate in a given moment is still your partner, your anchor, your home — for better, for worse, in sickness and in health.

I don’t believe you can build a real relationship by tiptoeing around and frantically avoiding some line that supposedly leads straight to divorce. Truth can be messy and painful, but it also liberates and binds. That’s how I understand true love: we are together despite everything, because as long as we have each other, the rest can be figured out. That’s why the song the main character sings in the film felt so moving and affirming to me.

It rests on the same principles: truth and shared experiences, whether easy or hard.

Notice how relationships actually form: first we meet, then we spend time together, we go through adventures, we see each other in unpredictable situations. We begin to notice not only what someone wants to show us, but also the real picture of that person — not always “pretty.”

I believe that “beauty” can be overrated and boring. Each of us has two faces. Alongside our light, we also carry a shadow — a “monster” that reveals itself only when you look closely; and sometimes the reverse happens: from behind the mask of the “monster,” beauty peeks through — if we look with enough attention. We remain in a relationship because it “happened to us,” not because we chose it.

In that state, we don’t grow.
I had no intention of watching “Purple Hearts,” because my friend usually recommends stories about innocent, romantic love and about “problems” that — in my view — aren’t really problems. Probably because she deeply believes in pure love; she’s almost childishly naive and simply good — as if the world hadn’t had a chance to spoil her, or as if she lived in a completely different reality than I do. That’s probably why we’re friends — she is my anchor, and I am her wings.

Wings don’t recognize limits; they reach high because they believe anything is possible. The anchor stabilizes and reminds us that not everything is worth reaching for; that the sun we’re flying toward might eventually burn us to ash instead of warming us in its glow. Wings see the goal and fly toward it; the anchor sees people and attaches to them.

One without the other doesn’t work well. If there’s only the anchor, there’s stagnation instead of stability, unused potential instead of growth, self-sacrifice instead of assertive help — and a kind of blindness born of naivety toward the people around us. If there are only the wings, isolation appears instead of healthy solitude; there’s achievement at any cost and a lack of relationships — and when things start to feel too close, the wings take off again “just in case,” to avoid being tied down. That’s a bitter victory, not a sweet, shared one.

Wings can do anything, but without the anchor they won’t find fulfillment; everything they achieve may ultimately prove worthless. The wings will be irritated by the anchor — and grateful to it at the same time. The anchor will love the wings — and probably never fully understand them. Together, they’ll fly high enough to satisfy the wings and low enough to keep from burning up. I think that’s what love looks like.

A home you can’t lose or demolish — a home that endures.

***This text refers to relationships based on mutual respect. It’s different with relationships where, for example, violence is present. It’s hard for me to speak to that — I haven’t been in such a situation and I hope I never will. If you’re in a toxic relationship, talk to professionals and, above all, take care of your own safety, health, and life. If your relationship threatens those, it’s time to pack a suitcase. And what then? I don’t know; professionals will know — and so will your heart and your reason.
Lately, I started watching an incredibly compelling Korean series on Netflix called ‘Tomorrow.’ I’m currently on episode 10 out of 16, and I’m not sure how it will conclude or if there will be another season. Initially, I began watching it to get a glimpse of the remarkably handsome Lee Soo Hyuk. However, I ended up taking blog notes during 8 out of the 10 episodes, and in 7 out of the 10, I found myself deeply moved to the point of tears. The entire series may not necessarily be a masterpiece, but the script and acting certainly are.

The plot revolves around the sensitive subject of suicide and explores the reasons why people take their own lives. In the world crafted by the screenwriter, there is a division of Reapers in the afterlife, tasked with handling special missions. Among these units is the CR crisis department, responsible for dissuading people from ending their own lives.

Each episode presents a different story, but perhaps the most surprising and emotionally impactful one for me was Episode 9, in which the team had to save a suicidal dog. This might sound unusual and not particularly serious, and indeed, my initial reaction was, ‘What am I watching?’ and ‘Who thought this was a good idea?’ Yet, that’s the nature of series; there are better and worse episodes, and you simply continue watching. So, I continued watching.

The ZR team was equally perplexed when assigned the dog as their next case. Kong was an animal who seemed to desire death, and it was their mission to change that. Initially, they suspected it was a system error, but ultimately, orders were orders, and the task had to be completed. It was thought that someone had abandoned Kong, but after consulting a veterinary clinic, it was revealed that the dog was sick and had limited time left to live. The main character couldn’t fathom how someone could abandon a sick dog and wished the owner eternal torment in hell after their life ended.

Later, it was discovered that Kong had run away from home of his own accord because he believed that the family he loved was suffering because of him. He didn’t want to be a burden or a source of sadness and decided that it would be better to die alone. It became evident that, in times of mourning and illness, humans and animals alike can behave irrationally and extremefully. After all, emotions know no bounds.

The above words were spoken by the HR manager, and it’s challenging to disagree with them. Frequently, as humans, we tend to place ourselves in a superior position in relation to the beings around us. Only with sufficient mindfulness and sensitivity can we uncover the truth that everyone is unique but ‘neither better nor worse’ when compared to others. In the end, we are remarkably similar.

When it comes to animals, there’s often a prevailing belief that they are unintelligent, lack emotions, and are driven solely by instinct. But is this really the case? Who gave us the right to underestimate others? How can we claim to understand what animals feel when we often struggle to accurately discern the emotions of the people closest to us, and at times, even our own feelings?

This tendency stems from our arrogance, pride, and ego, cultivated within ourselves. Why do we seek proof that animals can feel emotions, while we lack definitive proof that you feel the same as I do? Is our pride preventing us from admitting that we don’t know? Are we afraid of losing our perceived higher rank and status to animals? It’s as if we’re fearful of considering a sick person as an equal being, as it might make us feel inferior. In reality, it just makes us different.

For many of us, animals are often seen as mere additions to our lives, making our solitary days at home more enjoyable or serving as a source of a tasty meal.

Animals experience pain, sadness, and grief; they go through a mourning process. They feel pleasure when basking in the sun and discomfort when getting wet. Some engage in sexual activities not solely for procreation but also for the pleasure of orgasm. Some form lifelong partnerships, while others have multiple mates. They experience love for their offspring and other family members. They can recognize family bonds, have friends and acquaintances within and across species. They can express gratitude, a feeling that requires the ability to acknowledge that someone or something has brought joy to their lives. Cicero himself recognized that dogs are capable of such emotions.

Animals are not limited to basic instincts; they can also engage in more complex behaviors such as theft, deception, and manipulation. The author shares anecdotes, such as roosters deceiving chickens by pretending to enjoy delicious food while making loud noises. Magpies pretend to defend territory in the presence of their partners but flirt when alone. Foxes convincingly feign death while hunting for crows, even extending their tongues.

They are aware of socially accepted norms within their environment or herd, which can lead to feelings of embarrassment and confusion. Animals possess a sense of justice, which plays a role in maintaining harmony within the herd.

There are both timid and courageous animals, with courage defined as the ability to take action despite identified dangers.

Some animals can count, recognize their own reflections in mirrors, and even have distinct names within their herds. They display impatience, as observed in an experiment involving rats lining up, similar to human behavior in supermarkets.

Empathy and compassion are also found in animals. They provide comfort to other suffering animals, and the longer they know each other, the more effective this empathy becomes. This extends across species and mirrors human neural processes.

Animals exhibit free will and engage in altruistic behavior. They share food, rescue other animals, pass down knowledge across generations, and preserve traditions. They learn from experience, much like humans.

They have an understanding of nature and can predict weather changes, akin to human ancestors who lived close to nature.

As they age, animals may suffer from dementia, eat less, become irritable, and are aware of their age limitations and the passage of time, akin to humans.

These are just a few examples of the myriad ways animals exhibit complex behaviors and emotions.

What struck me the most as I read this book was the author’s emphasis on the significance of all the organisms that surround us within the ecosystem, without grading their importance. Often, we find ourselves more sympathetic towards domestic animals and less so towards farm animals. Creatures like insects are frequently considered disgusting and expendable. However, even the least appealing creatures have feelings, they are alive, and they play a vital role in the grand tapestry of life.

For instance, even ticks, typically seen as pests, experience hunger, desire, and the need to find a partner. Have you ever contemplated them in such terms? Of course, I’m not suggesting we start breeding ticks and taking them for walks. Instead, I aim to highlight that they too are living beings, each with their unique significance and purpose within the intricate web of life. They deserve respect, just like all the other organisms around us.

These words were shared by the protagonist of the book I recently read. Although it wasn’t an exceptional book, I found myself captivated by it. It falls into the category of what some might call a ‘chick flick,’ a genre I’ve read in abundance. I fondly recall my childhood when I would cry over the loss of animals. My father used to console me by saying not to shed tears because, according to him, animals had no souls anyway. He even forbade me from saying that an animal had ‘died’ because, as he put it, people die, and animals do not (there is a different word for it in polish without equivalent word in english). But is it really so? Or, as the quote suggests, are we trying to rationalize our lack of compassion or our cruelty towards beings we perceive as ‘soulless’?

We may not always have scientific proof for everything. In situations where we cannot definitively determine something, is it not worth extending the benefit of the doubt to the theory that animals possess feelings and have souls? They are living creatures that play vital roles in the ecosystem and deserve our respect. Instead of mistreating them just because we haven’t scientifically proven their equality as divine beings, should we not consider the possibility?

As humans, we have a tendency to judge and form opinions. This tendency often leads us to categorize beings into ‘better’ or ‘worse,’ ‘smarter’ or ‘stupider,’ ‘stronger’ or ‘weaker,’ ‘prettier’ or ‘uglier.’ Every day, we decide who deserves our time and help based on our personal preferences and biases. The most common argument I hear is that animals are ‘stupid.’ However, when we think about it, emotions do not require intelligence. We do not need to overanalyze to understand that we are sad, in pain, or experiencing joy.

With this perspective in mind and considering the atrocities that segregation has led humanity to commit, let’s reflect on how we treat all the creatures that share our world daily.

When we recognize that animals are divine beings, different from us but equally important, it can become uncomfortable, even immoral, to use them as we have been. Perhaps it is time to contemplate whether, for the sake of a new perspective and heightened awareness, we should sacrifice some of our comfort and reduce the scale of our objective use of animals, treating them as they deserve.

I believe that using and labeling them as ‘stupid’ or ‘unaware’ creatures primarily serves political and economic interests. Scientists have ample knowledge to confirm the intelligence of creatures like pigs, yet we do not see public messages promoting this awareness. Instead, we are bombarded with media advertisements touting the tastiness and health benefits of sausages that our children will grow big and healthy with. If people were fully aware of the sentient and conscious animals on their plates, would they still consume meat with such enthusiasm? Many might lose their appetite. However, we often prefer not to know, feel, or see it and convince ourselves that this is how it has always been – that animals are here to serve us. A similar phenomenon exists within our own species. Though we live in a civilized world, we must remember that practices like slavery and child trafficking still persist on a large scale across the globe.

Perhaps it is time to look upon all existence with understanding, respect, and love.

This thought crossed my mind as I rewatched the movie ‘Remember Me’ one Monday evening. I tend to choose films based on my current mood, letting it complement my feelings. So, if I’m already in a state of deep sadness, why not embrace it instead of seeking amusement in a comedy or diving into the complexities of a serious film? A tearjerker seems perfect when tears are already on the horizon, helping me delve into the protagonist’s grief and sadness.

One scene in the movie caught my attention, where the character Ally orders dessert in a restaurant before the main course. I remember watching it years ago and dismissing it as silly and banal. But now, I see it differently. It made me ponder how many times I’ve denied myself pleasures that may never come, how many ‘desserts’ I’ve left untouched in my life.

During one of my therapy sessions, my psychotherapist shared an insightful perspective: if something irritates us, there’s a reason behind it, and it’s an area worth exploring. This notion particularly struck a chord with me when I considered my reaction to a scene in the movie ‘Remember Me.’ It was a moment of revelation, sparking a shift in my understanding.

In this scene, the character Ally orders dessert in a restaurant before her main course. I remember watching this scene years ago, dismissing it as trivial and feeling irritation toward the character’s unconventional choice. As I reevaluated it, I recognized my underlying emotion: jealousy. I envied Ally’s ability to confidently break free from conventions and rules. For years, I had adhered to the opposite pattern – starting with the starter, moving to the main course, and when it was time for dessert, there was no room left. More often than not, I never allowed myself to claim the ‘prize’ I’d eagerly anticipated.

This pattern extended beyond culinary experiences. While planning my day, I would habitually structure it to fit in all my obligations first, with the hope of enjoying a well-deserved rest afterward, whether it meant going out with friends, watching a series, or reading a book. Sadly, when the time came for my ‘reward,’ I often lacked the energy to indulge. I willingly bid farewell to the anticipated pleasure, guided by my own self-imposed standards.
Subconsciously, I adhered to the same pattern for many years, withholding pleasures from myself until I believed I had worked hard enough to deserve them. This self-denial stemmed from feelings of unworthiness. There were instances, like my grocery shopping, where I’d deny myself more expensive products, citing that I hadn’t yet earned enough to afford them. This self-deprivation was irrational, considering that I earned enough to enjoy salmon regularly. In stark contrast, I would readily buy expensive and frivolous items for my husband simply because he desired them, never questioning the cost. It never crossed my mind that some things might be ‘too expensive.’

I fondly recall the day when, as part of my therapy homework, I had to write down five things I believed I deserved, and then I had to inscribe in my journal, in my own handwriting, ‘I allow myself salmon; I deserve salmon.’ It seems humorous to me now, but back then, this was a significant step in confronting a challenging issue that had felt impossible to overcome. Throughout my life, I had repeatedly denied myself simple and sublime pleasures, all while punishing myself for not achieving what I deemed as ‘enough’ or ‘perfection.

I know of an elderly couple who committed their entire lives to grueling, often near backbreaking labor in pursuit of building the house of their dreams. They invested their own hard-earned funds and adamantly refused credit. This arduous endeavor spanned over two decades. Upon its completion, they discovered themselves in a state of frail health and advanced age, rendering them incapable of tending to the dream garden and cherished home they had envisioned.

Similarly, I’ve encountered a middle-aged married couple who deferred their decision to have children in anticipation of achieving career success and financial stability. When they finally felt ready, they encountered an unfortunate reality – they could no longer have children.

Throughout my life, I’ve witnessed countless people presented with numerous opportunities by life itself. However, they perpetually waited for something ‘better,’ which, regrettably, never materialized.

Likely, each of us harbors a metaphorical ‘salmon’—a desire or dream we believe we don’t truly deserve. Many people aspire to ‘eat dessert first,’ metaphorically speaking, yet they remain in a state of perpetual waiting, anticipating some unknown permission, rule change, or an ideal ‘better time’ in the future. They await the arrival of a ‘better tomorrow.’

But the question we must ask ourselves is, what are we waiting for? The truth is, there’s nothing to wait for. Every day offers a perfect opportunity to savor the ‘dessert’ of life, right here and now.

No need to glance in their direction; you sense their presence throughout your body, as if they exude a mysterious power, almost sending tingles down your fingertips. We often jest that movie protagonists move in slow motion, ignoring explosions, as though the world around them behaves differently, pausing to acknowledge their presence.

As a young girl, I dreamt of becoming such a remarkable figure – a hero in the eyes of the world. Although that moment eluded me for quite some time, I’ve encountered it many times in my adult life. I still remember the taste of it and fondly recall those moments. I’ve achieved it before, and I know it’s theoretically within reach, but it’s deceptively simple yet challenging to attain without a significant dose of mindfulness.

My reflections on this phenomenon deepened as I recently rewatched “Coming to America,” a film beloved by many, which in Poland is often aired around Christmas. Akeem, the prince of a fictional African nation, embarks on a journey to America to explore the world and find a wife not chosen by his parents. Despite concealing his royal status and background, he attempts to blend in as an economically challenged resident of Queens. Akeem’s inner light remains impossible to hide. He dresses like the others, lives in a poor neighborhood, resides in a small working-class apartment, and works in the lowest possible position, cleaning in a fast-food restaurant. Everyone who encounters him senses that “there’s something different about him.” Almost everyone, because those who are superficial might not see it, even though it’s right under their noses. Their blindness limits them.

When parents and those closest to you consistently affirm your worth and uniqueness, you accept it as indisputable, much like the sunrise. In the palace, the prince interacted with numerous strangers, household staff, foreign dignitaries, and countless people eager to converse with him or merely share the same space. The outside world didn’t have a chance to erode his belief in his uniqueness; instead, it reinforced it. If the film’s protagonist had grown up in the “ordinary world,” his self-image, influenced by his parents, would likely change quickly during initial interactions with peers.

When I was a child, I loved to sing, and I did so whenever the opportunity arose. These impromptu home concerts, featuring songs from the likes of Britney Spears and the Spice Girls (I can’t hide the fact that I’m a millennial), were where I showcased my passion. My mother consistently praised my singing, often emphasizing how beautifully I sang and how much talent I had. I wholeheartedly believed her.

However, my first painful encounter with doubt occurred when I was just six years old. I wanted to perform on stage during a children’s festival. The event allowed anyone willing to present their favorite song and win lollipops. My mother was horrified by my idea, and she even offered me sweets not to perform. She feared that I would embarrass myself and, by extension, her. Whether I would have succeeded or failed, we’ll never know. That’s when shame took root in me.

I clung to my belief in my talent for years, at least until my time in middle school. I volunteered to sing a hymn in the church during mass. I attended a private Catholic gymnasium where we began each weekday with a school mass. I vividly recall starting to sing, only to be met with laughter from my classmates. Looking back now, it’s unclear whether they laughed because I was off-key or simply out of defiance and boredom. Regardless, that was the last time I sang in public. The experience shook my faith in myself and my abilities to such an extent that I still speak more softly when I’m stressed or feeling insecure.

The external world can significantly influence a child’s self-esteem, which is often untouched by judgments and opinions. Akeem, the character from ‘Coming to America,’ never had the opportunity to experience such doubt because he received unwavering assurance of his value and uniqueness from everyone he encountered, whether sincerely or insincerely. This belief was ingrained in his upbringing and became deeply rooted in his subconscious. It was this unwavering self-assuredness that allowed him to confidently radiate his unique qualities throughout his adult life, undeterred by the judgments that often break others.

Added to this self-esteem is a generous dose of proper education, exposure to diverse experiences, and meaningful social interactions. Unfortunately, not everyone has the privilege of such opportunities. While it’s often said that education is now accessible to all on an equal footing, this assertion falls short of the truth. The quality of our education is profoundly influenced by the economic and social status of our family, our place of birth, our origins, and the awareness of our parents.

It’s nobody’s fault that some are born into less fortunate circumstances – a family struggling financially, a location lacking access to quality schools, or a family that doesn’t prioritize education. However, individuals born into such situations face far more obstacles to overcome. Personally, I consider myself fortunate that my parents managed to send me to a private school, provide me with private English lessons taught by a native speaker, and offer tutoring when I needed it. These endeavors demanded significant sacrifices on their part, but my mother recognized the vital role of education, even though she didn’t possess a high level of formal education herself. I was fortunate to grow up in such an environment. Sadly, many of my peers did not have the same opportunities.

While I was immersing myself in art and culture, some of them were confined to their housing estates or watching Cartoon Network (if their parents were fortunate enough to afford cable). Such disparities have existed in the past, and they persist in the present. Life would have to be a utopia to ensure equal opportunities for all, and in our world, disparities will continue to exist.

I also had friends who were much more affluent, with parents who were entrepreneurs, doctors, and lawyers. There was a noticeable gap between us. Some of them went skiing in the Alps, while I spent time with my grandmother in the countryside. When I was on a school trip in Italy, they would send me postcards from exotic places like Tuscany or Cape Verde. As I was starting my own company and delving into the world of business, they were taking over their family businesses, gaining insights into the business world, or launching their careers as neurosurgeons. They achieved these milestones not just through their hard work, which we must acknowledge, but also because of their family backgrounds, resources, upbringing, and the environment in which they were raised. While it’s often said that the era of class divisions is over, the reality suggests otherwise.

….Now, returning to Akeem and the recipe for becoming the main character. In addition to a strong self-esteem, a good upbringing, education, and a social network, he possessed a well-developed sense of security. He knew his goals, planned step by step how to achieve them, and executed his plans with confidence. He could afford to do so because he had the security, including financial security, to fall back on. While we often say that money isn’t everything, it does play a crucial role in providing a livelihood. When we’re concerned about our financial well-being in the near future, how can we confidently and systematically pursue our goals when we’re struggling to make ends meet? Everyone faces different challenges, and while some have greater obstacles, others find it more difficult to admit it to themselves or to others.

Now, imagine a scenario where we are fully aware of our value, uniqueness, and safety. We know our goals, and we understand what it takes to achieve them. With heads held high, open hearts, contentment, and a positive attitude, we enter a room filled with others. In such a situation, doesn’t the hero within us emerge? Don’t the people in the room look at us and see a winner? They certainly can, for how can they not see it when we exude the confidence that we are great and came here to succeed? As I pen this article, I feel a surge of excitement and energy at its peak in my fingertips. If I’m vibrating with this energy, how can others not feel it too?

I recall an incident from last year when I was scheduled to deliver a lecture on time management. I was prepared, had written an excellent speech, was well-dressed, had a good night’s sleep, and had a satisfying lunch. People were eagerly awaiting my talk, knowing it would be worth their time based on my previous speeches. I walked onto the stage with my head held high, unhurried, gazing around the room, and began speaking in a composed voice. I felt no embarrassment, no judgment; I believed that my words held value, stemming not only from my professional experience but also from my core beliefs and heart. It was one of those moments when I felt like the main character. I wish everyone could experience such confidence every day or at least many times in their lives. Self-confidence can be cultivated, learned, and deeply felt within ourselves. Naturally, we become individuals who make their presence felt in any room, where no hall or building is too vast to contain our charisma and passion.

Once learned and experienced, it should not be forgotten. The question remains: will we notice it, recognize it, and work to ensure it isn’t suppressed?

‘Coming to America’ will undoubtedly grace our screens more than once, and perhaps it will appear on Polish Netflix. I encourage you to watch this light-hearted comedy, but pay close attention to the aspects I’ve described in this article. You’ll discover that a seemingly shallow box-office film can provoke profound reflection and even enlightenment, surpassing the impact of many serious, Oscar-winning productions. You only need to know how to look and shift your perspective. After watching the movie, take a moment to look at yourself from a different perspective, viewing yourself through the eyes of a child who recognizes their intrinsic value and significance.

In 2021, a new Korean drama premiered on Netflix under the English title It’s Okay Not to Be Okay.
In 2021, a new Korean drama premiered on Netflix under the English title It’s Okay Not to Be Okay. I had previously written an article about it on my blog, yet I return to this show—and to my readers—with new reflections.

The main character is an author of children’s fairy tales. Her persona is exceptionally grotesque and cruel, which makes her fascinating in her unconventional way. While volunteering at a psychiatric hospital, she explains to the patients what fairy tales are truly about—with brutal honesty, devoid of embellishment or comforting lies.

This scene shook me deeply, and the patients portrayed in it reacted just as emotionally. Some began to cry, others tried to ignore or downplay her words, and the caregivers stood in disbelief. It was, in short, an incredibly dramatic moment. I watched and listened, unable to stop myself from feeling a pang of envy for that raw, unfiltered surge of emotion that I hadn’t experienced in years.

From an early age, my generation was taught to dream and gaze at the stars—to wish and aspire to make them come true. I, a child raised on Disney fairy tales, know this all too well. Yet no one ever told us that beyond dreaming, there must also be action. No one said that wishful thinking alone—without our own effort—would leave our desires forever unfulfilled.

I remember the day my therapist said to me, “Aleksandra, princess, wake up from the fairy tale you’re living in.” I was furious, but that kind of anger can serve as a powerful catalyst for change.

I watched that scene and absorbed the lesson the main character was teaching. I envied her courage, her principles, and her ability to speak the truth without excessive compassion—to say it to patients who needed dreams and hopes the most. Some of them would never leave the facility or recover fully, and yet she destroyed their dreams and trampled on the stars they still had the strength to gaze upon. After reflecting on it for some time, I realized it was the best thing she could have done. Why? Because it was real. Every truth—pleasant or painful—is better than the kindest lie. Before watching that episode, I would never have even considered such an approach. Now, I am grateful for that insight and determined to cultivate courage.

Another remarkable thing is that Moon-yeong Go treated those people with genuine respect and without any trace of discrimination. She treated them like everyone else. For a person who has experienced rejection, isolation, and feels different from most of society, this is the purest form of equality.

In my writing and in conversations with others, I have always repeated: speak the truth, treat people equally. Yet after watching that episode, I felt like a hypocrite. I realized that when speaking with certain people, I often shared only part of the truth, only part of my opinion—believing I was doing so to protect them from pain. In reality, I was causing them even greater harm.

The heroine gave her patients a profound gift: the understanding that life is demanding, and no one but ourselves is responsible for motivating us to live rightly—to live better, to grow, and to achieve our dreams. She helped them realize that true happiness comes from self-acceptance, from understanding and coming to terms with one’s situation—not from getting exactly what we want, nor from living in a beautiful golden castle beyond seven mountains and seven forests.

The boy awoke from yet another dreadful nightmare. One day, driven by his desperation, he sought out a witch with a humble plea.

“Please erase my bad memories so I don’t have nightmares anymore.
We often find ourselves wondering why we suffer so much. Why me? Why can’t I just be happy? In reality, we should embrace both sadness and joy, regret and gratitude, happy and less happy moments, for they collectively mold us. It is through them that we become who we are. Without these experiences, we would be nothing more than empty, superficial shells.

I don’t have an explanation for everything. There are things and situations that I can’t turn into something positive. However, I’d like to share a few examples from my life for which, in hindsight, I am grateful. These experiences crossed my path, and I managed to survive them.

My father let me down more times in my life than I can count. But thanks to those disappointments, I stopped seeking security in a man. I learned that I must ensure my own safety and stability.

My beloved grandfather passed away before I could bid him farewell. It taught me that nothing and no one should be taken for granted; we never know when circumstances will change.

I called off my engagement with my current husband a few months before the wedding. It allowed both of us to realize how deeply we love each other.

During my school years, I endured isolation from the group, gossip, and disapproval. These experiences made me resolve not to treat others that way, as I know the pain it inflicts. I also learned to be comfortable in my own company. When I embraced it, I naturally gained the approval of others.

I’ve earned many awards and distinctions, experiencing the taste of joy and self-satisfaction, as well as the bitterness of human jealousy, feelings of inadequacy, and invisibility despite being the best. These experiences liberated me from the need for others’ approval. No matter what I do, I’ll never satisfy everyone, but I’ve learned how to please myself.

What about your challenges, problems, recent moments of sadness, fear, or anger?
